St. Edward High School's Social Studies Philosophy
The Social Studies Department is committed to teaching students knowledge of and respect for the past so that they may better understand and live productively in the present and prepare intelligently for the future. As educators, we seek to instill in our young men an appreciation for the customs and traditions of other cultures, and to help them develop real insight into the world around them as well as a deeper understanding of their own identity. Through a rich and varied curriculum, we offer our students the opportunity to meet the great men and women of the past who contributed so much to the fields of history, art, political science, and religion. By studying the achievements of past generations, students gain not only knowledge, but also valuable lessons about cherished virtues such as honor, courage, persistence, and loyalty.
St. Edward Council on World Affairs
Through participation in United Nations simulations, the St. Edward Council on World Affairs offers students a unique opportunity to examine the complex problems of international relations, learn the importance of research and cooperation, and hone their skills in public speaking and persuasive argumentation. Members of SECWA are invited to attend model United Nations held throughout the school year. In the past these have included Cleveland State, Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, and Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
Mock Trial Mock Trial provides an opportunity for high school students to participate in an academic competition. It is designed to foster a better understanding of the American democratic legal system and to encourage development of analytical and communication skills. Students will also be furthering their citizenship education, develop an appreciation for our justice system and the role of our laws in our system. Through this first-hand experience, the mock trial competition can teach students about their rights and responsibilities under the Constitution. The experience can even prepare students for a possible involvement as attorneys, parties, witnesses an jurors in a trial. Finally, as a member of the mock trial team they will build a partnership with the legal community, teachers and other students.
AP Courses
In conjunction with the College Board’s Advanced Placement program, the St. Edward Social Studies Department offers an opportunity for students to take courses in college credit during their junior and senior year. Credit is awarded based on student scores on nationally administered exams given at the end of each school year. St. Edward students have achieved remarkable success in this program, consistently exceeding national averages in both subjects.
