Laurels for Language Department
Tuesday, March 20, 2007
The St. Edward High School Foreign Language Department is tops! The 2007 Ohio Foreign Language Association (OFLA) Award for Outstanding Program will be awarded to the St. Edward Foreign Language Department at OFLA’s annual conference held this year in Cleveland on March 23rd. Each nomination received by the awards committee was evaluated based upon the following qualifications: Exceeding typical foreign language activities, encompassing a unique distinction, and involving a strong group of educators.
The nomination process consisted of resumes, list of activities, and letters of recommendation from administrators, parents, students and friends of the language program. The members of the committee were impressed by the overall quality of the St. Edward teachers and the quantity of work accomplished by them in the community. Each teacher in the seven member department was significantly involved in outreach programs, including teaching Latin roots to elementary students and translating letters from children in the COAR orphanage in El Salvador to their sponsors.

One of the nominators commented that each professional in this department makes a valuable contribution in his or her own way. This group of educators is a classic example of creating a “whole” which is even “greater than the sum” of its invaluable parts.
Both the President and Awards Chair of OFLA sent letters of congratulations to the department. In each letter, both noted the many accomplishments and praised the willingness of the teachers to go beyond their normal teaching activities. In many ways, these teachers are living the Holy Cross Mission: The Competence to See and the Courage to Act as Men [and women] of Faith.
